One minute it was here, the next minute it was gone. Harry Styles of One Direction had nine inches of his luscious curls cut off on May 6, 2016, causing great devastation and outcries in the fandom.

From the very beginning, Styles has been known for his hair. He’s gone through a variety of hairstyles over the years – keeping it short and curly, styling it into a quiff, and even more – leading fangirls to obsess over his beautiful locks.

Since 2014, Styles has been growing his hair out past his shoulders, planning to get it cut once it reached the minimum length needed to donate charity.

As it was his plan all along, there shouldn’t have been so much surprise and devastation on the day of the reveal. Styles posted a picture on Instagram of the hair that he got cut off last Friday. He donated it to the Little Princess Trust.

This picture caused a lot of commotion because of the big change. Styles never posts selfies on his social media, so fans knew they needed paparazzi pictures to see his new hair style. On May 10, the long awaited reveal was bittersweet. He debuted his new look, but was wearing a hat, while out and about in London with his sister.

Harry Styles still has the world waiting for a proper selfie showing off his new haircut. Until that day, though, fangirls will continue to wonder what his hair looks like underneath the hat, and they will resume their rants and posts about how Harry’s locks are all gone now.
