On Monday, Oct.3, a choir of marching cleats could be heard approaching the game field; they were neither the football players, nor the soccer players. They were the proud 2011 Powder Puff players. The senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen teams were warmed up and ready to win a plaque on a legendary trophy and exclusive bragging rights.
The battle began against the top dogs and the fresh meat. Seniors started off great by getting the ball to senior Paige Lombard who made a touchdown in the first play of the game. The freshmen would not be taken down that easily they fought hard but unfortunately their defense was not as strong as they planned and senior Renee Huy went in for the second touchdown. Angry and ready to go, the freshmen kept control of the ball for some time. On a first down, ten yards away from the goal-line, the freshman quarterback threw the ball, only to be tipped off by senior Megan Ungs and intercepted by senior Morgan Montaudo, who regained about 50 yards. Senior offense was let back on the field and shortly after the Huy ran in the last touchdown; assuring the seniors a win of 21-0. Seniors celebrated with cheers, chants and a couple tumbling moves.
Now it was time to determine who, between the juniors and sophomores, would come out on top for a chance to combat the seniors. The juniors were destined to win, starting off the game with an interception by junior Morgan Lorenti and a touchdown by junior J.J. Bailey. Nevertheless, the sophomores came back with a powerful punch. Completing two touchdowns, sophomore Alexis Mouton ended up winning the game for the sophomore team. The junior team did play a fierce game marked by junior Lauren Spiegel who dove and summersaulted to grasp a sophomore’s belt, a yard away for the goal line. The final score was 14-6; the sophomores were ready to play the seniors.
Anyone who stood on the field that night flashbacked to last year’s game, when the juniors (present-day seniors) almost lost to the freshmen (present-day sophomores). Seniors would not let them come that close again. There was a fair amount of play time before senior Caroline Tuxhorn made the first touchdown against the juniors. Not long to follow Mouton came zipping past the seniors’ defense line and scored a touchdown. Both teams kept their best players on the field now being tied at 7-7. Unfortunately, during a blitz senior quarterback Ashlie Koonce rolled her ankle and had to watch from the sideline the rest of the game. “I hadn’t thrown a football in a year,” second-string senior quarterback, Haley Cameron said. “I hoped I wouldn’t mess it up!” Mess up was the absolute last thing Cameron did; she delivered a beautiful pass to Lombard, who ran it in for a touchdown. With only a couple seconds left in the game, the seniors’ main priority was holding the sophomores back. The sophomores snaked their way down the field towards the goal-line. Coming less than five yards away, the sophomores ran out of time, completing a first down as the clock screamed zero. A roar of cheers accompanied the announcer as the seniors and fans celebrated a close call. “[My favorite part was] seeing the disappointment on the sophomores’ faces,” senior defense player Sabrina Lutz said. The final score on the board was 14-7 as the seniors gathered around the trophy for a team picture.
This was a game that hopefully no one missed! But if you did, make sure to attend next year’s Homecoming Powder Puff game to support your favorite class!
