Going Without and Giving Their All

This year’s Lady Canes Varsity softball team is getting right in the swing of things with their 5 month season that started in January. The lady canes have been on their winning streak 6-0 and have already been warmed up thanks to their practices 5 days a week, Monday through Friday from 3-6 pm.

“Our practices include a lot of repetition work, and working on small things to get better.” senior Rachel Taylor said.

Keeping with traditions and staying at the top of their game has been a major role. Many freshmen have joined the team and the team faces a loss of multiple seniors next year.

“This year we’re probably going to be underestimated with all the new freshman. We just have to make sure we work together, so that we step it up and perform well,” Taylor said.

But the team’s secret to success isn’t just working together. Each member also gives up one of their favorite guilty pleasure foods. This was a tradition started last year by Coach Kuk. The girls forbidden foods ranged from french-fries, to bread, soda, and even potatoes.

Some, like freshman Kayla Shipley decided to give up Coca-Cola.

“I chose to give up Coca-Cola because I got to the point where I would pretty much be having one every day, and I know they’re really bad for you,” Shipley said.  “I really do feel better now that I’m not drinking it all the time.”

This tradition allows the team to maintain a healthier diet. This will last the whole duration of the season, and will continue past the regular season if the Lady Canes move on to the State Championships.
