First year runner Jayal Baptiste aims to lead the way

– Former AAU star hopes to run his way to states.

On your mark, get set, go.

Senior Jayal Baptiste thinks he can lead the pack. With many AAU competitions behind him, he knows he can transfer his talents from AAU to the Hurricanes.

“I ran the two hundred and the four hundred, and I’m thinking about the one hundred,” Baptiste said. He placed in the two hundred and four hundred, coming at the top in the two, and second place in the four.

“I used to run for the Blazin’ Ravenz. I raced some big people out there, nothing like the kids in high school,” Baptiste said.

Not many people have the ability to start their first season on the team. Normally players would have to take the time to prove themselves and show the coach their abilities, so it’s not common for athletes to start playing for the school in their senior season. Most players have to wait for their own senior seasons to have the chance to start.

Regarding his chances of being a starter, he feels confident.

“I think [the team is] good. All I have to do is work harder than everybody else,” Baptiste said.
