Florida City man admits to stealing nearly $25K in Keys charity checks, deputies say

MONROE COUNTY, Florida. — A Florida City man was arrested Wednesday after admitting to stealing a pouch holding nearly $25,000 in checks intended for a Florida Keys charity.

Tarrell Traeon Collins, 42, faces one count each of burglary and grand theft, according to jail records.

Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said surveillance footage captured Collins parking a pickup truck along Ocean Reef Drive around 12:10 p.m. and approaching a golf cart where the bag of checks had been left.

The video reportedly showed him reaching into the cart and taking the pouch.

Investigators said Collins was confronted shortly after and returned the bag to deputies, confessing to the theft.

The pouch contained approximately $24,990 in checks made out to a charity from multiple donors.

Records indicate Collins is set for arraignment on Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. Bond information was not immediately available.
