Last Friday the PMAC club locked in more than forty students from all grade levels in the media center for the entire school day. The reason behind this was to lock out a large issue in our society and beyond, discrimination. “Discrimination is the unjust grouping of people based on gender, race, age, ect.” Said Junior, Carly Hastings. Mrs. Gragoutsis supervised the lock in; Carly Hastings, Rachel Snyder, and Jessica Tran constructed this event.
The lock in consisted of games to get the students interacting with each other. These games were especially helpful for students that might not know each other. Through out the day workshop activities were presented to bring awareness to this global issue. The students were broken up into groups to categorize what the thought was the leading cause of this problem. They were to brainstorm their ideas and present it in front of the group. Also, The students were asked to brainstorm ideas on how to prevent this issue from escalating in the future.
Videos were also shown to present new discussion topics to make the students rise to the event and speak up about their personal views on the subject.
Jessica Tran, junior, said, “I think the lock in on Friday went really well because people were actually participating and really getting into some arguments discussing their opinions on discrimination.”
