Amnesty International Club

– Amnesty International continues to promote human rights.

Amnesty International is a club for the people around the world to unite and come together to protect human rights. Amnesty international’s featured campaign this year is to stop torture. The campaign is two years going from The Windy City all the way to Nigeria. The club also stays up to date with topics such as the lashing of Saudi journalist, Raif Badawi. There are also other topics, such as Guadalupe, an El Salvadoran women who was imprisoned after having a miscarriage.

“Amnesty International was started in 1961 as a nonprofit, independent organization to protect human rights worldwide,” English teacher, Amnesty International sponsor, Demi Youssef said.

Here at the school, the Amnesty International club meets on the third Thursday of every month, and the club is always welcoming new members. Applications to join are filed under “paperwork” and dues are $15 to be turned into P-15.

The young men and women involved in this club have various volunteering opportunities. The students write letters to whoever it is addressed to, urging them to take action. The students are also credited with one hour of volunteering, but there is a limit of two letters per month.
