“It’s October 3rd.” In the wild Safari (high school) filled with rabid animals (teenagers), a worldwide phenomena is occurring. National Mean Girls day.
For some students, this day may be odd and downright frightening. Imagine it. You’re literally thrown into a day where there are numerous girls wearing pink and they are all screaming inside jokes that you A) don’t understand and B) are slightly freaked out by. Yeah. Scary stuff man. So, for those unfortunate souls who don’t quite understand the day, here’s a breakdown.
The day is all centered around the movie Mean Girls written by Tina Fey. The movie is a comedy about girls and cliques in high school. It’s about a girl who moves from Africa to America and attends her first public school. In this school she learns what it is like to experience the drama, gossip, and mean girl attitude.
So why October 3rd?
In the movie the protagonist, Cadie – played by Lindsey Lohan- has a crush on a boy named Aaron Samuels. Aaron then asked Cadie what the date was. Cadie – being the stereotypical girl – thought it was a definite sign he liked her and thus proceeded to internally implode while she answered with, ” It’s October 3rd.” This was one of the quotes that became popular and was the beginning of this “holiday.” Simple, right?
Why Pink?
This year October 3rd happened to be on a Wednesday. When Cadie began to infiltrate and sit with a clique of girls called the Plastics, they gave her a set of rules. Rule number one? On Wednesdays, we wear pink. This can help explain the Barbie like appearance of many girls on this day.
To fully understand all of the inside jokes, one would have to watch the movie in its entirety. Seriously though? Just watch it. It will be 96 minutes of your life well spent.
Good. So it’s settled. You can go shave your back hair now.
