Unconventional meet up surprises Playlist go-ers

Meet and greets, more accurately described as a “pay and say hey” sort of situation, are often rushed and unsatisfying in the eyes of the hardcore fans meeting their favorite celebrities. While Playlist Live, a yearly YouTube convention in Orlando, has improved their meetup situation, the entire process is still incredibly brief and hurried.

One YouTuber is expected to meet hundreds of fans in only a couple of hours.  The convention center wants the meet and greet to be fast, the fans want to actually speak to their idols, and the creator probably wants some sitting-down time and a break halfway through–and it seems as if not everyone can get their way.

As lines grow longer, managers enact more restrictions, such as limiting the fan to only one picture opportunity and only having a measly 20 second conversation.  The creators are exhausted after three hours of standing and animatedly meeting all of their supporters (obviously trying to give everyone the best experience).  The fans grow more impatient as lines move forward, especially the ones in the back who have less time than the fans who made it to the front of the line first.

People aren’t really sure of a good solution to this problem, either.  Meet up lines are cut off early, but fans who don’t make it in time are left hopeless.  Creators are given a five minute break in the middle, but this cuts time short for everyone in the post-break line, as the convention needs the space for later events scheduled.

Jenna Mourey, better known as Jenna Marbles on YouTube, attended Playlist Live 2016 and had a different approach to her meet and greet.  She held two planned meet ups, while most other creators only had one.  This way, the group was split in half, one meeting her Saturday, and the second on Sunday.  Her room was not scheduled for an afternoon meetup, so she had more time for each and every fan that she saw.  She made sure the security and her manager knew that she would be spending plenty of time with each person she met, so no one would be rushed.

Fans were able to talk to Jenna for as long as they liked.  She created a personalized experience for everyone in line, allowing as many picture and pose combinations one could come up with.

The Jenna Marbles meet and greet was by far the best planned out of the other larger-scope creators’ and paved the way for fans to have a great Playlist experience.

Though not everyone can do this sort of chilled and relaxed meetup as there are time restrictions, those who were able to meet Jenna this weekend really had a lucky experience.  They got to spend a couple minutes, as opposed to a couple of seconds, with one of YouTube’s most popular and most creative users.  Well done, Jenna.
