In recent months, Apple AirPods have become a worldwide trend. Most people either have them or see others using them—including celebrities. However, they’re somewhat pricey at $159.00, and some people probably wonder whether these AirPods are worth the price.

There are many different opinions about these popular wireless earbuds, ranging from disinterest to desire and animosity to adoration.

One factor unrelated to the functional or aesthetic uses of AirPods is the memes. “As an owner of AirPods, I think the memes are dumb,” Gabriel Lopez (‘20) said. “My friend keeps sending them to the group chat though.”

“The memes that have come out of the rising popularity of AirPods are completely useless and not funny,” Avery Gross (‘20) said.

For some students, price is an issue. “They’re efficient, I guess,” Micah Grayon (‘20) said. “It’s nice not to have wires, but they’re a bit on the expensive side. I like the BlueTooth though, so I prefer the BlueTooth headphones with the wires that go around your neck.”

The expensive price only fosters an elitist mindset surrounding these AirPods. “AirPods are overrated,” Jennifer Young (‘20) said, “and there’s higher quality BlueTooth earbuds out there for a cheaper price.”

While people may dislike the notion of AirPods due to the trendiness of it all, many begrudgingly agree that Apple was smart in marketing their AirPods. “I think AirPods are a clever invention that are useful to iPhone consumers,” Gross said.

For some, AirPods may be convenient due to their size—and inconvenient for the same reason. “They’re great to carry around, but they’d be so easy to lose,” Patrick Nguyen (‘22) said. “I don’t know if I’d want to risk losing 80 bucks on one earbud if I lost it.”

The opinions surrounding AirPods are at an all-time high, but Grayon believes it shouldn’t be such a big deal. “People are making too much of a fuss over them,” Grayon said. “In the end, they’re just headphones.”
