The debate of DC vs Marvel is nothing new, and many people think that DC’s newest movie “Blue Beetle”, didn’t help DC. Many fans thought that this movie was unoriginal, and only got an overall rating of 3.7. Fans said that the film felt like a mixture of Iron Man and Spiderman, and a lot of
key parts of the plot seemed reused. Nevertheless, others said it was a great movie, with good characters and a well thought out script.
The actual plot of the movie is about a man who is fresh out of college and gets chosen by an alien scarab to be its symbiotic host. With this, the scarab bestows him with a powerful suit of armor. This changes his entire life, and he becomes a superhero known as Blue Beetle. The otherwise ‘normal’ character with the powerful suit of armor is where many get the idea of unoriginality, while others say it’s simply part of the original 1939 comics. However, the first Blue Beetle was actually a police officer who ingested “Vitamin 2X”, giving him superpowers. Just like many other Marvel comics, the story has changed over the years to appeal to changing audiences and media interests. Fans that liked the movie was an accurate representation of the original comics and were excited to see one of the oldest DC comics brought to the big screen.
The character of Blue Beetle himself never had too much recognition, only appearing in a few T.V.
shows, so many people who were long time fans were excited for this movie. Karen Marcos (27′) said “personally I liked the movie, I thought the script and plot and stuff was pretty good. I heard a lot of people saying that it was too much like Iron Man, but I thought it was mostly original.” The film features Xolo Mariduena as Blue Beetle, which fans were divided on. Additionally, there are actors like
Becky G, Bruna Marquezine, and George Lopez. Though the movie gained some traction, the debate between Marvel and DC continues on.
