If you enjoy being on the water with the wind blowing and the sun shining and maybe boating is your thing, then you would most likely benefit from joining a sailing club.
First you’re probably thinking-what’s a sailing club? Or we have those here? Well guess what, they do, right here in Dunedin Florida. That or you’re thinking sailing is slow and slow is boring. Although that may be true, there are many other ways to do it other then cruising across the ocean. There are tons of things to do and being with your friends makes it that much better.
Meeting in rain or shine, cold or hot, holiday or not they meet every week at the Dunedin marina and sail for a few hours on their 1925 sailboats. Then go out for ice cream at the nearest Strachan’s. Once a month they have a business meeting held to discuss and plan upcoming events such as Regattas and camping trips.
If you don’t know what a Regatta is, it’s where all sailing crew’s/ships from around Florida meet up for a weekend competition of boat racing and other activities like knot tying, first aid, navigation, and other boating events.
Yes, it may seem like a lot of work, and it is. You have to work hard and show that you are committed to the ship and participate at the best of your abilities. Be eager to learn but just do your best. It’s a lot of fun and you learn lots of new things along the way.
Don’t think it’s all work and no play. Every month or so they go on a camping trip. Either on an island or at a campsite they hang out, jet ski, and practice for the Regatta’s. Then every summer, usually around the first week of July they go on a bigger trip. Sometimes just to the Keys or like last year, to the Bahamas. They depart for up to 10 days from Fort Lauderdale to their next destination. They sail over night, no stops along the way until they arrive to where they need to be. There are look outs at night and work to do to keep everything together but it’s all worth it in the end.
So if you’re interested in being on the water, hanging out with people who enjoy doing the same things as you, and competing in Regattas, then grab your friends and come out and hang with the sailing club of Dunedin, FL.
