Few people expected Palm Harbor to have a successful season.

So far, the Canes football team is 4-1 so far ranking third in districts. The majority of the credit goes to Palm Harbor’s defensive side of the field. One specific player on defense is Dagan Cecere (‘17).

Cecere is an important part of the Canes defense because he controls the back half of the field. The positions that he currently plays are free safety (F/S) and cornerback (CB).

“If I had to choose I would choose to play cornerback because I like one on one matchups,” Cecere said.

The main reason for his liking of the cornerback position is because mainly Cecere gets “one on one matchups” to show more skill over the receiver. This is very important in the game because if Cecere has total control over the receiver then the quarterback has two options: change his intended target, or throw an interception.

In the most recent game, Cecere was moved to his favorite position. Throughout this whole game, he made sure Alonso High’s quarterback did not pass the ball in his direction. Later in the game, the quarterback thought that he saw an advantage over Cecere, but sure enough the ball was intercepted on that play.

Part of Cecere’s great performance on the field comes from when he is at home just watching film.

“When I’m not at football I usually watch film to study the other team’s offensive tendencies,” Cecere said.

Doing extra things, Cecere has made it easier to predict what the strengths and weaknesses of the player(s) he has to guard.

As for some people on the team, Cecere has become a kind of role model on the field.

“Dagan is a good role model because he always gives his all when he is on the field. Also, when Cecere leaves the field he doesn’t stop working,” Elias Kaltsounis said, “He is the next Richard Sherman.”

After Cecere finishes high school he plans to go to college and hopefully play football, but that is not all he would like to do. He also plans to receive a law degree.

“I would prefer to go to the University of Miami,” Cecere said, but he will accept, “a successful football college.”

Overall, Cecere has been performing to the best of his abilities this year and still has an extra year to prove himself the colleges. As Cecere continues to practice on and off the field, he also continues to become more of a role model for all of the people playing along side him.

He has also set some goals for himself and has started to achieve some of them already.

“I would like to lock down my receiver every game,” Cecere said, “ I would also like to have four interceptions by the end of this season.”

By the end of this season Cecere is expected to be one of the essential players on the Canes defense.
