Oh, The Places We’ll Work

When students start craving real life skills in their life, it might be time to get to work.

Whether it’s because they want to work for the experience or just want to afford the newest video game, working is something that many high school students contemplate.

In order to get a job in Florida, a student must be at least fourteen years old. While there are certain places that kids can’t work for safety reasons, there are still a variety of places high school students can work, depending on whether they desire money or experience.

Minimum wage in Florida is currently $8.05. Be forewarned, though. For the first ninety days of each job a student starts, the employer can pay their student employee the youth minimum wage, which is only $4.25. Depending on how valuable time is to the individual, getting a job in the summer might not be worth it, unless they’ll be willing to continue the job into the school year.

If a student is in rigorous classes, they are advised not to work during the school year. So if it’s possible, it’s better to wait until summer to get a job.

There are fewer work restrictions once a student turns sixteen, which means there are also a lot more jobs a student can have.

AMC, Starbucks, Wendy’s, and pretty much any other fast food restaurant, hire students that are at least sixteen.

For younger students who are fourteen or fifteen, neighborhood jobs like babysitting and mowing lawns are still an option. However, if they want to get a more traditional job, they can try working at a flea market or at Publix.

Doctor’s offices and AMC are also hiring. If students are interested in working at a certain location, it’s important to just ask the manager how old they have to be in order to be an employee, or find out if the manager is willing to make an exception.

A student that works at AMC gets paid and receives free movie tickets, so it’s a popular job.

For students who care less about money and more about experience, an internship might be better for the time being.

Internships are typically part-time, unpaid positions. However, a few internships are paid.

The average internship lasts a few months to a year, so if students are looking for something more long term they should get a job.

If experience is desired, then volunteering is probably the best way to work to somewhere. Granted, students won’t get paid, but they are guaranteed to get some actual experience. Unlike internships, volunteers aren’t required to be at their workplace, so if there’s nothing to do that day, volunteers don’t have to stay at work doing nothing.

The problem with internships is that, due to restrictions,  fourteen and fifteen year olds might not be able to work as many hours as an internship requires them to, so it’s important to keep the amount of hours required in mind.

As long as students keep their minds open when looking for work, they will discover hundreds of opportunities that suit their needs.
