Guilty Then Proven Innocent

Have you ever been accused of doing something you never did? Or you were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Possibly, evidence shows you were the one to commit the crime.Oscar Fowler was charged in July 2013 of shooting Neykee Demetruis Bostic, a dear friend of his who was found with more than twenty bullet wounds. A year after the murder had happened, law enforcement convicted Fowler. Now after three years, people seem to be questioning whether this ruling of first-degree murder on behalf of Fowler was just.

How is the power of the people getting this information wrong? Why is this happening? To serve years in prison and be innocent, how does this happen?

The study by American University’s School of Public Affairs (thinkprogress.org) had gathered information on how wrongful convictions can occur. It could be a confluence of circumstances, misunderstood eyewitnesses, and/or government misconduct, which means lying or misleading jurors.

Adrian P. Thomas, a father of seven children, rushed his 4-month-old son to the hospital in September 2008. The police had investigated the body for 10 hours, concluding that the child had died from head trauma, and it could have only occurred if someone was in the household.

He served 6 years in prison, to later find that his son died from sepsis, a medical condition.

Reports that these wrongful imprisonment cases occurred “in part because of efforts by prosecutors willing to admit their offices made mistakes,” The Huffington Post had written in 2015.
