The past few weeks at PHU have been busy regarding sports, Homecoming and Homecoming week, and even academics like FAST testing and the SAT/PSAT coming up.
Our Homecoming was early this year, as last year it was in October and the year before it was even in December. Homecoming week is always something to look forward to for students at PHU, and our teachers even participate sometimes too. “I love dressing up for homecoming week and seeing everyone’s outfits they come up with.” says Megan Miller (24′). I think it really adds something to the week when you can see the teachers are in on it too, just like how it seems better as more people dress up. Some go all out, in costumes that keep them from even sitting down at school. Some paint their faces, and spend more than a few dollars on their outfits. Then you may see some who are a little
less committed but still want to be involved, with outfits more on the subtle side.
This year, Monday was Generations Day with freshmen as toddlers, sophomores as
middle schoolers, juniors as parents, and seniors as grandparents. Every year we see the
seniors go all out for this day. They love bringing walkers to school and buying grey wigs to
really go all out. That was a great way to kick off the week, following with Celebrity Day on
Tuesday. There were many different costumes on this day, including Queen Elizabeth, and
multiple 21 Savages and Drakes. Wednesday was a theme we did not have last year; Heroes vs. Villains. Thursday was Decades Day, a senior favorite as it brings about Senior Sunrise and lots of neon clothing items. “My favorite day was Decades Day. I loved wearing neon and going to Senior Sunrise in the morning. I got to take so many pictures with people and it was nice to be at the Causeway.” says Megan

(24′). Friday wasn’t the most interesting way to end the week, it was color wars. Some had a lot of fun with that, with wigs and body paint, others might have lost their motivation to dress up.
To end the week our football team beat Countryside at a Hawaiian themed game at
home, following with Homecoming on Saturday. One thing about Homecoming this year was that it was at our school. The students currently at PHU have always had it at a venue, so there were mixed feelings about this. “All my other years at Palm Harbor I’ve had Homecoming at Innisbrook. It was still fun at the school, but I do miss it where it used to be.” says Megan (24′). We’ll have to see how PHU decides to continue Homecoming in the future, and what everyone else thinks about it being at school. Is it worth it to keep it there? Or do we need to find another way?
