By now, you’ve all probably heard “Friday” by 13 year-old newcomer, Rebecca Black. The song, now available on iTunes, is gaining popularity rapidly, but for all of the wrong reasons.
The song is talks about an average girl getting ready for the weekend. I think that’s why it’s entitled “Friday”…just saying. Really though, that seems to be all it’s about. Oh and of course, “fun, fun, fun, fun”, which is repeated all throughout the single.
In my opinion, “Friday” is pretty bad, but probably not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. In fact, on an acoustic version featured on Good Morning America, Black sings without auto-tune: a program used on singer’s voices to make them sound computerized, like T-Pain. Without the useless addition of auto-tune, Black sounds somewhat better. I’m not saying she’s the next Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, but the girl’s not the worst singer of all time.
She’s signed to Ark Music Factory, which I’ve never heard of until recently. Neither has anyone else I know. The company seems sketchy to me, it looks like one of those talent agencies where rich kids’ parents pay thousands of dollars to make their kid a star-talent clearly not necessary. The rapper in Black’s music video is also in pretty much every music video of every Ark Music Factory teen artist, which to me, is a little on the creepy side.
Black’s received a LOT of criticism for “Friday”, which she shared on her Good Morning America interview, just last week. I’m not going to glorify these rude comments by repeating them, but they’re pretty harsh; nothing an 8th grader should have to take. I get it people-you have opinions, just like I do, but no need to be so mean with them! Imagine if you were in her position, how would you feel if complete strangers around the world were constantly saying your music is the worst they’ve ever heard?
