Junior Madison Ducharme works on her notes for her HOPE class. She hopes that her notes will aid her in studying for her upcoming test.

It’s pretty typical to be given homework on a regular basis, tests every so often, quizzes here and there, and two exams a year. However, without proper study habits, students may fall behind or become lost in lessons.

It’s important to pay attention in class, but the mind may tend to drift off. To combat this,  sit away from friends, take good notes, and get involved in class discussions.

Having an unassigned seat may be an upside to being in class. Sitting with friends can be fun, but it can also be distracting. This can take focus away from the lesson or the assignment.

Rather than listening to the teacher, it’s more likely that friends are talking to each other and are more involved in that conversation.

While it may be entertaining and more enjoyable to sit with friends, moving to a quieter, less distracting seat will make it easier to pay attention to the subject being taught.

When it comes to taking notes, there are different ways to write them. Formats can include doing bullet points, outlines, Cornell notes, or a personal style. It’s vital to include important information such as keywords, diagrams, or anything that will most likely be included on a test or quiz.

Writing in a personalized style of notes may be easier for some because it will be easier to go back and understand. Having notes that are sparse and that lack important information can make it difficult to understand later on.

As unappealing as it may sound, taking part in class conversation will make paying attention in class easier and more beneficial. It will clear up confusion and allows a student to express their thoughts on the topic.

Asking questions will also help give a student more clarity on something they’re confused about.

There are plenty of other things that can be done to improve a students performance in class. However, improving note taking skills, engaging in discussions, and becoming less distracted in class, is a start to becoming a better student.
