PHU has a lot of clubs. Like, a lot. Some would probably like to put their own mark on the school through a club! But what to do? What hurdles will you have to clear in order to create a club? Why would you want to create a club? Well, for fun! Also, for college app material and the pride of making something people sacrifice their own time for. Plus, it’s a great chance to improve your time management, leadership, and speaking skills.
Now that you (might) have the motivation, what do you need to create a club? Well, first off, you need a club idea! But there’s plenty of ideas to go around. If you want to create a club, you can look for what you’re passionate about. Programming? Art? Does a club like that not exist currently? Well then, you might want to go for it!
So, you’ve gotten an idea. Well, what next? You’ll need to gather potential board members and make a plan. Your friends (as long as they’re competent) will do in a pinch. Your plan must comprise of bylaws (how the club is run), lessons or a roadmap of the sessions, and other things tailored to how your club will be run. Think of a schedule, because you will be competing with other clubs for members. Avoid Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, because the biggest clubs are usually found there, and will steal a portion of your potential audience.
The next step is to find a sponsor for your club, which is what I believe to be the hardest part.
Remember that the teacher is giving up their own time to host a club, so try to find a teacher that isn’t already hosting another club. The sponsor will handle all things related to money, such as club dues. Not every teacher has the time on their hands, so it’s important to respect their decision when they decline. There are plenty of teachers in this school, at least one of them will try to help!
After you’ve crossed that hurdle, it’s time to take the victory lap that is the signature. You will
need to collect about twenty signatures to prove that the club has an audience that’s interested in it. You can simply ask friends and classmates to sign, and the required 20 signatures will be filled in in no time at all.
