With tryouts and conditioning for their upcoming season just about over, PHU girl’s varsity basketball team is ready to dominate the court. After weeks of shooting, running, and playing hard to impress the coaches, the girls are ready to begin the season!
In order to make the teams, the girls had to fill out paper work, attend tryouts, and have a good foundation of playing both offensive and defensive positions. Having prior knowledge of the game and experience in playing basketball certainly didn’t hurt the players in their quest to make the team.
“Tryouts are tough, but the coaches are just trying to get us ready for the season,” senior Kimberlee Kurtz said.
Following the grueling tryouts were conditioning and practicing, which had the team prepping for about two weeks. “I like conditioning,” Kurtz said. “It means the season is coming soon.”
Captains Kristine Fuller and Jamie Appelt are leading the team this season, which runs from next Monday, Nov. 14, to late January/early February. This season is set to be good for the Canes, but when they take on Clearwater High School, it is sure to be the game of the year.
“Clearwater should be the most exciting [game], because it is a long, seeded rivalry. We came so close to beating them last year, so it will be a great game this year,” Kurtz said.
Games can be a rush, but also something to get the players’ minds going. “I think about winning and trying to understand the other team’s strengths and weaknesses,” Kurtz said. “That way we can adjust our defensive and offensive plays.”
With preparation and much conditioning under their belts, the team is anticipating a successful season this winter. Come out and support the girl’s varsity basketball game next Monday, Nov. 4 in their first regular game of the season!
