Transitioning from Middle School to High School

Two students participate in a question and answer survey about the transition from middle school to high school.

Brooke Sanders and Sean Otero are 9th graders in the Medical Program trying to adjust to high school.

1. What is the biggest difference between middle school and high school?

Brooke Sanders: “The size of the school was a big change.”

Sean Otero: “The size was a big change for me as well.”

2. What is your favorite part about high school so far and why?

Sanders: “Meeting new people and discovering who you are and what you want to be.”

Otero: “The opportunities we get in high school.”

3. What’s the hardest part about high school for you?

Sanders: “Keeping up with all of the homework.”

Otero: “The tests are hard.”

4. Are there any common misconceptions you’ve heard about high school?

Sanders: “There aren’t as many fights as people tell you.”

Otero: “It’s not as crowded as people tell you.”

5. What sports teams and clubs are you thinking about joining?

Sanders: “Golf, volleyball, and soccer for sports teams and for clubs, drama club.”

Otero: “I’m just focusing on joining soccer.”

6. What is your favorite subject? Do you have a favorite teacher?

Sanders: “Favorite teacher is Ms. Johnson and my favorite subject is Algebra II Honors.”

Otero: “Probably two, Mrs. Zuelke for medical and Dr. Applebaum for biology.”

7. How are you adjusting to the new schedule of waking up early and getting out of school early?  Do you like it better?

Sanders: “I like it better because we get out earlier and we can hang out with friends after school.”

Otero: “I take first period online so I don’t have to get to school as early.”

8. How are you managing your time differently than in middle school?

Sanders: “I have to plan out times to go to my locker because I can’t carry everything around or keep it in the classrooms.”

Otero: “I have more work so I have to spend more time studying at home.”
